I thought I&#8217;d share my experience, since it seems in conflict with the two main arguments.<\/p>\n<p>The first being what the correlation between Google+ 1&#8217;s and search ranking is, the second being that Google just wants everyone to write quality content.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a chart from the last eight months of this site, you can see readership increasing over time, with large bumps from things that did well on Reddit, HN, G+, Twitter, etc (usually one, but not all of the above). These range up to 50-100 twitter\/g+ shares:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/172.104.26.128\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/traffic.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1799\" alt=\"traffic\" src=\"http:\/\/garysieling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/traffic-578x128.png\" width=\"578\" height=\"128\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Google Analytics has this nice &#8220;Social Media&#8221; chart which confirms the same story:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/172.104.26.128\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/social.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1800\" alt=\"social\" src=\"http:\/\/garysieling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/social-578x212.png\" width=\"578\" height=\"212\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At the same time though, you can see the &#8220;Search impressions&#8221; and &#8220;Search traffic&#8221; charts are pretty much flat:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/172.104.26.128\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/webmaster-tools.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1801\" alt=\"webmaster tools\" src=\"http:\/\/garysieling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/webmaster-tools-578x108.png\" width=\"578\" height=\"108\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/172.104.26.128\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/search.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1802\" alt=\"search\" src=\"http:\/\/garysieling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/search-578x125.png\" width=\"578\" height=\"125\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The lesson I&#8217;d take from this is that writing good content is important, with the beneficial effect of making Google irrelevant, as, in my case, it&#8217;s now the source of ~10% of my readers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s some debate on SeoMoz \/ Hacker News.
